The Showdown at Twilight
“Can you really say these behaviors are significant at this hour of the night?” Evelyn exclaimed in a loud voice that caused irritation. “My husband is trying to rest, and there’s no security to support the vandals on my porch.”
The man with the umbrella, dressed in an impeccable dark suit that contrasted sharply with the night’s dampness, was momentarily taken aback by the woman’s vehemence. He removed his hat lightly, leaving behind one of our cold, calculating stares. 🕵️♂️
“Good evening, ma’am,” the man said with icy politeness. “We’re looking for Marcus. His vehicle is visible from private property in a few hours. We just want to ask him a couple of routine questions.”
“Routine questions? At midnight?” Evelyn let out a bitter laugh. “My son has been with me all afternoon helping me with my chemotherapy medication. If you’re having any trouble with your vehicle, take the necessary safety precautions. Now, take possession of my property before the sheriff’s leaflet does.”
The man on the dark path peered into Evelyn’s father’s house. The tension was so thick you could cut it with a knife. However, the unwavering determination in the old woman’s eyes made him hesitate for a moment. One wrong step in a residential area with evidence could lead to our children’s surgery.
“Tell Marcus the world is a small place,” the man said, his tone laced with a death threat. “And some of these things are more valuable than paper.”
The man saw the scene and walked silently toward a black sedan, waiting for it to start as he walked down the street. The car approached slowly, disappearing around the side of the road without turning on its headlights.
